History of Black History Month
Black History Month began in 1926 as Negro History Week, founded by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). It was originally held in the second week of February to honor Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both born in that month.
In 1976, it expanded into a month-long celebration, officially recognized by the U.S. government.
Today, Black History Month is observed in several countries, celebrating the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black communities, including civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., whose legacy continues to inspire the fight for justice and equality.
Those Who Changed the World
Harriet Tubman (1822-1913)
She was born into slavery in Maryland and later escaped, becoming a key figure in the Underground Railroad, leading hundreds of enslaved people to freedom. A courageous woman who risked her life countless times to lead enslaved people to freedom. She once said, “I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger.” Her words embody unwavering determination and strength.
George Washington Carver (1864–1943)
A brilliant scientist and inventor who transformed agriculture and enriched society through his discoveries. He developed groundbreaking uses for peanuts and believed that “Knowledge is the key to unlocking doors.”
Maya Angelou (1928–2014)
A poet whose words moved hearts and inspired courage. In her powerful poem “Still I Rise,” she declared resilience in the face of oppression, proving to the world that dignity and strength endure.
Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968)
A visionary leader of the Civil Rights Movement, whose dream of equality reshaped history. His iconic “I Have a Dream” speech continues to inspire the fight for justice, proving that one voice can change the world.
Chadwick Boseman (1976–2020)
A modern hero who taught Black children around the world that they are limitless. Through his role as Black Panther, he showed that “Wakanda Forever” is more than a phrase—it is a symbol of pride, representation, and unity.
There are more names to honor, but let’s pause here for now. The path they paved is now ours to walk. Success isn’t reserved for a select few—it’s for anyone with passion and perseverance. No matter where you are or what you do, your journey matters, and you have the power to make a difference.
The Power to Transform the World
Black History Month is more than just a commemoration—it’s a celebration of the courage, creativity, and limitless potential that have shaped history and continue to inspire the future.
