Today, let me introduce a delightfully French toothpaste I found at a local supermarket while traveling through France.

Travel is joy. And indulging in local delicacies that you can’t find anywhere else? Pure bliss. While I can now afford a bit more luxury than I could during my broke student solo-travel days, one thing hasn’t changed: I still love getting a glimpse into the daily lives of locals—the slice of life in each place I visit.

I often head straight to supermarkets and drugstores, trying to imagine what it feels like to live there, even for just a moment.

This time, I found myself in Dijon, France. Yes, the mustard capital. In a cozy, walkable part of town, I stumbled into a neighborhood-sized French supermarket chain.

Franprix—quietly blending into the city like a corner shop.

What I love about international supermarkets is spotting Japanese brands that look completely different overseas—or better yet, finding products I’ve never seen before.

Like these.

Oyakata’ means master—so you know this ramen means business.　I wish they sold it in Japan.

NISSIN is a worldwide ramen brand. So what’s with the name ‘SOBA’?

So anyway, I was on the hunt for toothpaste.
I’d once picked up a surprisingly good one in Switzerland, so I thought—why not try a French one this time? I wasn’t looking for a global brand I could buy anywhere. I wanted something local, something the French everyman might toss into their basket without a second thought.

And boom—there it was!

Not a single word of English on the package. I had no idea what it said (I don’t speak French at all)Just a jolly-looking gentleman who seemed straight out of French history, smiling proudly on the box.　And sure enough, there was an Eiffel Tower on the box—so yes, this had to be French.

Back at my lodging, I Googled it… and bingo!
My instincts were spot on.

This was no ordinary toothpaste—it turned out to be a traditional French brand with over 130 years of history!(That big bold “130” on the package? Yeah, turns out it wasn’t just a random number.)

Turns out, Email Diamant was the brand name.
At first, I thought—what does email have to do with this?
The phrase “Expert Blancheur” highlights its focus on tooth whitening.

And while it did say “Rouge” on the package, I definitely wasn’t expecting the toothpaste itself to be bright red. Shocking! It has a minty, anise-like flavor.

旅は、楽しい。その土地でしか味わえないグルメ三昧も最高。今では、学生時代のような貧乏旅行と違って、少しは贅沢もできるようになったけれど、変わらないのは「現地の人の暮らしを垣間見るのが好き」ということ。わたしは、その街の「日常の一コマ（slice of life）」を感じたくて、スーパーマーケットやドラッグストアに足を向ける。

今回訪れたのはフランス、ディジョン。そう、あのマスタードで有名な街。
歩いてまわれるこぢんまりとした街の一角で、ふと入ったのがフランスのローカル感あふれるチェーンのミニスーパー。

海外のスーパーには、母国日本のブランドが国内とは全く違う顔をして鎮座してたりする。上記英文の写真をみて！「親方ラーメン」ってなに？　NISSINといえば世界屈指のラーメンブランドではないか。なのにヨーロッパではソバって呼ばれたいの？なぜ？

ね、海外のスーパーは面白いでしょ。

さて、今回のお求めは、歯磨き粉。前にスイスで買った歯磨き粉が何気にいけてたので、今回はフランスものの歯磨き粉を買おうと思ってました。世界どこでも売ってるブランドではもちろんなく、フランスの庶民が使う国産を買いたかった。そして、見つけた！フランスの歴史を感じるおっさんがにこやかにフィーチャーされているのでフランス産に違いない。。まったくフランス語のわからないわたしには本当にこれが歯磨き粉なのか確信はなかったが’ご購入。宿でググってみたら当たり！これは、フランスで130年もの歴史を持つ伝統的な歯磨き粉であった！
（パッケージにドーンと書かれてる130ってそういう意味だったのね。）

Rouge とあったがまさか歯磨き粉自体が真っ赤とは！たまげた！
